Rain chains, called "kusari doi" in their native Japan, make beautiful and practical backyard decor. Although rain chains have been used for centuries in Japan to gather water, these days in the west they're used primarily for draining water from the roof. However they're used, rain cascading down these chains makes stormy weather look and sound a little more cheerful. Usually made from copper or stainless steel, the chains may be simple interlinked loops or more fanciful rows of tulip or lily cups. To use a rain chain, just remove your downspout and put the rain chain in its place. To complete the look, place a matching copper rain basin under the chain.
You may prefer a private backyard retreat for just yourself and your spouse. This could be designed in a small, secluded area of your backyard, near the beauty and tranquility of your garden, or surrounding a relaxing hot tub. The furnishings in your personal backyard retreat can range from a comfortable garden bench, a hammock, or a rejuvenated love seat from indoors.
The chairs or loungers are available with or without cushions. These make them very comfortable as well as offering the opportunity to have a special fabric design which blends in beautifully with the surroundings. These are very comfortable for guests as well as relaxing in the afternoon or evening hours. Stretching out on a lounger with matching ottoman provides a perfect place to rest at the end of a busy day.
The most common yard accessories cater to birds and include the bird feeder, bird house and bird bath. The reason they are so popular is because they attract birds to the yard and give them an incentive to stay a while. Most people enjoy listening to the birds sing and fly around. They are very beautiful creatures. They are nature's real live backyard decoration with their bright colors, lively personalities, and beautiful songs. Also, the bird accessories are very various with many purposes and can be tucked into the branches of an overgrown tree, suspended from a porch awning or placed in the middle of the yard.
Lighting is a very important part of your backyard design. If you do a lot of outdoor entertaining at night, you will want bright lights that illuminate your yard well, especially near your dining area. Coleman's propane powered tabletop torches are easy to use and perfect for the backyard. Smaller patio lights are ideal for walkways or sitting areas and simple tiki torches provide an inexpensive lighting option as well.
Feeders were our main focus on how to initially draw the birds into the yard, after all, a birds gotta eat right? We learned that different birds have different eating habits as well. Robins prefer open areas to feed, where as smaller birds like the sparrow enjoy feedings they can perch on, and hummingbirds can be drawn in with a simple sugar and water mixture you can make at home (1 part sugar to 4 parts water, no sweeter than that). The great thing about a hanging bird feeder is that a mixture of seeds will set a table for a good variety of birds.
